Hi, I'm JT and these are my thoughts on community, content management, Plain Black, and WebGUI.
At the WUC I unveiled some new policies around karma, which created quite a bit of buzz, so i thought I should share those with you here.
First, now that we're doing only 2 major releases per year, the old karma RFE policy doesn't really work anymore. So instead of knocking off the top 1-5 RFEs per release we (Plain Black staff) will be having karma RFE days once per month, where we all work on closing as many RFE's from the list as possible. We'll announce these days on the community calendar so anyone in the community that wishes to join us in closing RFEs can do so.
In addition, you may now gift your karma to other users in the community. This can be a nice way to say "thank you" to someone that has helped you out.
And finally, you may now spend your karma on physical goods such as Gooey Dolls, T-Shirts, and WUC tickets. 100 Karma == $1. That makes karma just a little more valuable. No you won't be able to buy stuff in the Bazaar or pay for recurring subscriptions using karma. For the bazaar, we can't very well pay our vendors in karma. And for the recurring transactions, like hosting, you might run out of karma and then we'd shut down your site, and you wouldn't be a very happy camper.
I hope that these new additions to karma, will make the karma system even more useful and exciting to the community. It created quite a buzz at the WUC, and the WUC is usually a good indication of the community at large.
As self-proclaimed karma-whore I really like these additions.
I would really like to be able to 'sell' my WebGUI additions in the Bazaar for karma only. That is why I posted this RFE to do just that.

Personally, I do not like the idea of selling contributions for karma. In my oppinion that is against the community thought. But what about adding a "donate karma" function to the Bazaar? Given voluntarily it would be a completely different thing.

I have seen it. But the function is well hidden and not very convenient to use. I was rather thinking of something similar to the PayPal button with quick options added (give 50, 100, 200 or 1000 pts). Another good place for this function would be the profile view. Just some thoughts...

Why not sell karma at that rate of 100Ka/$. Some people want RFE but do not have the karma, and sometimes they may pay for it for the RFE. Just thought.

I see where you're going with this, and there were at least 3 people at the WUC that brought this idea up as well. My concern though is that the whole idea of karma is that you are contributing to the community in some way. Being able to purchase karma seems like it may degrade karma's value in the community.
Yep, I agree! Me, for example, I am a lazy guy. If I was given the opportunity to buy karma at a rate of 100 points for $1 I would do that instead of earning it hard on webgui.org. Money should not rule the direction into which webgui goes! I know...

For 7.6 it is the third-tuesday of each month. However, that's not necessarily true for 7.7 or 7.8 so I didn't want to state it so explicitly.
I also wish I had some sort of amazing mathematical formula as to how I came to these dates that you could use to wow and amaze your friends, but I don't. =)
RFE days are a great idea, especially with the invitation for the wider community to join in. Sounds like it'll be a great way for new contributors to get their feet wet. Great stuff.
As suggested at the WUC it'd be kinda cool if the karma donated to an RFE gets awarded to the person who implements it as a bounty. Someone would need to work through the karma market economy implications first though..
Actually I really like the idea. I like it so much that I ordered my own private copy of the developers guide so I can be a developer too. That book should be available for karma too!
Plus I put in an RFE to implement this.

I wrote a wiki page on how much karma you get for doing what.
Is there any chance at getting a authoritive list of this?
